According to the early written records, Odessos (nowadays Varna) was founded by migrants from the Asia Minor town of Miletus in the second quarter of 6th century BC. This was the period of the so-called Great Greek Colonization. The name of the town, Odessos, means a "settlement on water", "Watery" and it is not a Greek name but of an earlier linguistic origin which suggests the presence of an older village on the same territory.
